The 4th and 5th grade students at CES were privileged to meet two published authors!
On Friday, author, Chris Minich, entertained the fourth graders with an excerpt from his book, The Misadventures of Princess Sydney. Minich's novels capture the silly, yet charming, antics of his beloved pooch, Sydney, and Sydney's pesky brother, Buddy. Sydney's parents aren't convinced that Sydney knows she's a dog, which amused the students. Chris brought his wife and illustrator, Janelle Minich, along to assist with the presentation. Minich shared an inspirational personal story about his struggles through school as a child and what he was able to accomplish with dedication and perseverance. The Minichs donated a copy of both novels to CES, complete with autographs from Chris and Sydney!!
Also on Friday, a New York Times best selling author, Lauren Oliver, presented to the fifth grade students. Oliver helped the students understand what it takes to be an author, which includes embracing your "strangeness". Oliver invited the students to put on "special lenses" to help them see the world in new ways. During a brainstorming activity she showed the students pictures of mundane objects and pushed them to think creatively about other uses for these household items. Her latest novel for young readers, The Curiosity House: The Shrunken Head, will surely be a big hit with the fifth graders when it shows up in the CES library! The Curiosity House is part of an imaginative adventure series about a group of orphans with extraordinary abilities. In this tale, Shrunken Head, the orphans are determined to get back the most prized possession stolen from the relic museum. The students enthusiasm and participation throughout the presentation were evidence that she inspired them to open their minds as readers and writers.
