Balanced Literacy
When it comes to literacy we use a balanced approach. Balanced literacy includes the following components:
We teach our students to be readers and writers through the workshop model. A typical literacy workshop would look like this:
It is important for students to be reading just-right books during independent reading times. Every student will be able to “book shop” in the classroom library twice a week to find independent reading material for the week. Their book-baggies will contain just-right books on their level. Here are some questions to have your child ask themselves when figuring out if they have a just-right book
Your child's teacher will frequently assess their reading level using Reading 3D. Reading 3D is an observational reading assessment that gives us a comprehensive picture of your child's ability to read with comprehension. Reading 3D is a vital tool for teachers to inform and change instruction based on a child's individual needs. In the Reading 3D assessment students must be able to express their comprehension both orally and in writing. |
